This week, Unlocking Detention has been ‘visiting’ Brook House and Tinsley House detention centres, near Gatwick Airport. The Gatwick Detainees Welfare Group put us in touch with Marino (not his real name), who joined us on the phone from Brook House for a live Twitter Q&A on Thursday afternoon. A huge thank you to Marino for his time and insight.

First question for Marino starts from the beginning… #Unlocked18 pic.twitter.com/msJZz3ysG6
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
Marino: I’ve been detained in Brook House since May, so about 5 months. #Unlocked18 https://t.co/MPQARRcOsE

A rare opportunity to hear directly from people in immigration detention. @DetentionForum hosts a live Q&A tomorrow, Thurs 1 Nov, between 2-3pm, with Marino who is detained at #Brook, with no release date. Tweet your questions to #unlocked18. pic.twitter.com/Dez475j8OH
— Catherine Hurley ? (@hurleycat38) October 31, 2018
Q: How were you detained?
Marino: I came from Scrubs [HMP Wormwood Scrubs]. I was there 5 months. I didn’t know I was going to be moved to a detention centre until the day I was supposed to be released. If you’re not told anything, that’s the worst. Not knowing. #Unlocked18 https://t.co/qvQDGyeC2a— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
Tomorrow for #Unlocked18, @DetentionForum will be doing a Q&A with 'Marion' who is currently detained at #BrookHouse. Tweet your questions in to hear back from Marion.
My Q: What did you know about detention before you were detained? Did you ever expect to be in this situation?
— Simon Hilditch (@SimonHilditch) October 31, 2018
Marino: I had heard about detention before but I didn’t think it was going to be anything like this. I never expected to be here. #Unlocked18 https://t.co/PuVP1fGWjj

Marino: Keep your mind occupied. #Unlocked18 https://t.co/0ESz8wHFXn

Our first question to Marino, currently being detained in Brook House and taking part in #Unlocked18 live Q&A tomorrow is about what it's like day to day to be held in indefinite detention. What would you ask? Tweet with the hashtag '#Unlocked18 pic.twitter.com/AZ7NOPBGP7
— AVID (@AVIDdetention) October 31, 2018
Marino: I’ve been going to Spanish class since I’ve been detained. I’m learning the basics. And art class. It’s the only thing that keeps my mind off detention. You’ve got to keep your mind occupied. Otherwise you end up being a cabbage. Day in, day out. #Unlocked18 https://t.co/iGnt8GyzUR

The @DetentionForum is running a live Q&A today 2-3pm with Marino, who is being detained in Brook House. Like everyone else in removal centres in the UK, he doesn't have a release date.
We'll be asking about alternatives to detention. Ask your own question using #Unlocked18 pic.twitter.com/XS6z1jzF6Q
— Liberty (@libertyhq) November 1, 2018
Marino: They could start by not locking people up. My Spanish teacher was telling me that in Spain, they allow people to live in small towns. They don’t keep them in detention. #Unlocked18 https://t.co/HKIE77HrTV
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
Here's another question for Marino in #detention in Brook House IRC from Detention Forum members #Unlocked18. pic.twitter.com/0BILNecLfY
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
Marino (1/3): Not really. If you ask for help, they get pissed off. I was ill in bed. I rang the buzzer in excruciating pain. A nurse came. She said, I can’t do anything about it. I said, can you take me to hospital then? She said it’s not her problem. #Unlocked18 https://t.co/6LhW8nim27
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
Marino (2/3): They look after you better in healthcare in jail. There’s so many people in pain here. People coughing up blood. There’s a time when painkillers don’t help. But people don’t get taken to hospital. It’s absurd.
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
Marino (3/3): I’ve had surgery after surgery. It’s not a good place to recover.
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
Tomorrow for #Unlocked18, @DetentionForum is doing a Q&A with 'Marino' who is currently detained at Brook House. I would like to ask two questions: pic.twitter.com/qdrpbOiJg5
— Mishka ? (@Mishka_anonym) October 31, 2018
Q1 from @Mishka_anonym is about access to legal advice.
Marino: Yes, my lawyer is amazing. She calls me most days and gives me updates every time. #Unlocked18 https://t.co/g1NEzRw4d4
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
Not long to go until the @DetentionForum's live Q&A at 2pm with Marino, who is being detained in Brook House without a release date.

@libertyhq also asked about access to a lawyer – one of the major stumbling blocks to accessing legal advice in detention, although fortunately not in Marino's case.#Unlocked18 https://t.co/8HFiC7jJ5N

https://twitter.com/Gala_dr/status/1057952320233857026
Marino: I’m really happy with @GatDetainees. They’re really helping me, they put me in touch with @Medical_Justice who were the only people who could help when the Home Office said I was fit to fly. Without them, I don’t know what I would do. I would be put on a plane#Unlocked18 https://t.co/CEDZfu52G3

An offline question for Marino.
Q: Do you listen to music?
Marino: You can listen to music in your cell. I like everything. I like country. Old school, like Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton. #Unlocked18 pic.twitter.com/VUgi1cPbDK— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
Another offline question..
Q: How many hours are you locked in your room?
Marino: We’re locked up from 8.45pm till 8am. It’s not a prison, is it? I feel like, if people feel like they need to go to sleep, they can decide – we’re grown men. #Unlocked18— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
1) How do people (guards/fellow inmates) treat you on a day to day basis at Brook House?
2) Are you told how long you might have left in Brook House, or is that left open?
@DetentionForum #Unlocked18— Joshua Stein (@joshua_n_stein) October 30, 2018
Joshua's 2nd question is about whether you're told how long you have left in #detention…
Marino: No, you don’t get told when you’ll be released.#Unlocked18 https://t.co/bUGNKtSTy7
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
A question (or 3) for Marino, but also a request to please pass on solidarity, strength and hope from outside. He is not alone. There are people fighting with him. #TheseWallsMustFall @DetentionForum #Unlocked18 pic.twitter.com/TcCXLHQzjt
— Ben du Preez (@Ben_du_Preez) November 1, 2018

The @DetentionForum is running a live Q&A today 2-3pm with Marino, who is being detained in Brook House.
Here's my question for Marion: How many people do you share a room with? What happens if you don’t get on? #Unlocked18
— gareth glynn (@garethglynn) November 1, 2018
Marino: I did share a room with someone from Slovakia who couldn’t speak any English. Now, I have a single room. People end up having an argument and fighting, because they don’t understand each other. #Unlocked18 https://t.co/VJYKN5y3wK
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
Our second question to Marino as part of #Unlocked18 live Q&A from Brook House tomorrow is about the impact of indefinite detention. Imagine being locked up and not knowing when you will get out.
You can ask Marino a question too if you tweet with the hashtag #Unlocked18 pic.twitter.com/h5MXVHkea6— AVID (@AVIDdetention) October 31, 2018
Marino (1/2): The first month is alright. But then it drags on. People start getting suicidal thoughts after that. It really messes you up mentally. Not having hope. #Unlocked18 https://t.co/UhZCIEKM93
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
Marino (2/2): If it was prison, they’d let you know when you’re getting out. It’s meant to be a removal centre – but people are detained here for months. They’re not following the rules. Some individuals want to go home voluntarily. But they’re being kept here. #Unlocked18
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
And: What’s the most frustrating thing about the immigration / detention process?#Unlocked18 @DetentionForum
— Simon Hilditch (@SimonHilditch) October 31, 2018
Marino: It’s seeing people who are re-detained. They get a taste of freedom and then they’re brought back. You don’t know where you stand. I would lose the plot.#Unlocked18 https://t.co/H2tu7yDsJW
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
The @DetentionForum is running a live Q&A today 2-3pm with Marino, who is being detained in Brook House.
My question is: Are you able to go outside? Can you see any trees or flowers? #Unlocked18
— Francesca Romberg (@franromberg) November 1, 2018
Marino: Yes. You can go out in the yard. I’m looking at it now. There’s some grass. There’s one tree. It looks sad. There’s a couple of benches and some exercise equipment. #Unlocked18 https://t.co/CtzMrRBb6n
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
https://twitter.com/rrromany/status/1057178173631332352
Marino (1/2): You’ve gotta be strong. Otherwise you tend to get suicidal thoughts. I don’t know how I’ve managed to survive. I think it’s the art. I wasn’t making art before I was detained. #Unlocked18 https://t.co/NpE1p11fZo
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
Marino (2/2): People actually lose the plot. After they’ve been here for months, they’re not the same anymore. Some people are strong; some people break easily. #Unlocked18
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
#Unlocked18 QandAs with people currently detained are a vital way of finding out what detention is really like and more about the individuals affected by it. Here's my question for Marino who is currently detained in Brook House @DetentionForum pic.twitter.com/8fF38NOT4y
— LisaLeziza (@LisaLeziza) October 31, 2018
Marino: I’d like to be painting and decorating. That’s what I was doing before I went to prison. I built up my own clientele. I’ve got a passion for painting. It’s not like doing something just for the money, it’s because you love doing it. #Unlocked18 https://t.co/p8YRU4uxbK
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
https://twitter.com/susywillcox/status/1057934492000772097
Marino: People are being treated like slaves. It’s mental slavery. That’s the worst part. It’s not being physically locked up, it’s being mentally locked up.#Unlocked18 https://t.co/xszpfzBDHY
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
https://twitter.com/EiriOhtani/status/1057953266569342976
Marino: I wish she could come and see people here. You’re treating people wrongly. People come in mentally alright but when they leave they’re a totally different person. If she could see this, she wouldn’t be able to do what she does. #Unlocked18 https://t.co/Qjayy1Mun5
— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
Question II @DetentionForum #Unlocked18 pic.twitter.com/jNx3Rx3NN0
— Ben du Preez (@Ben_du_Preez) November 1, 2018
@Ben_du_Preez has a similar question for Marino – what would you say to those in power? Marino's answer (above) draws attention to how little those making the decisions actually know about #detention.#Unlocked18 https://t.co/FLXJm78F7c

2nd question from @Mishka_anonym.
Q: What gives you courage to keep going?
Marino: Keeping busy. Keeping your mind occupied. Going to art group or English lessons. If you don’t keep busy, you’ll definitely lose the plot.#Unlocked18 https://t.co/g1NEzRNFBE— TheDetentionForum (@DetentionForum) November 1, 2018
